700 Spools of Thread, April 3 -8, 2012, presented by chashama, supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, Garment District, New York, NY
Over the course of seven days, Manning transforms the window front chashama gallery space into a jungle of thread and fabric. The work is a continual performance, centering on a woman entwined in hundreds of spools of thread. These spools are constantly being fed into multiple sewing machines, operated by women stitching seemingly endless lengths of fabric. 700 Spools of Thread (Keep it Together) connects with its immediate surroundings within the garment district offering a street view glimpse into the often forgotten and anonymous world of seamstresses. Additionally, it highlights the multiple sometimes conflicting roles women are expected to play in today’s society.

I explore interconnectivity, intuitive mark making, and metaphysical networks of energy in my works-on-canvas. My process is meditative and involves layering of paint and tape and hand stitching thread into the canvas with an industrial needle. I encourage the viewers of these works to apply personal metaphors to find meaning, such as an organized chaos, a mapping system or the human relationship to a larger cosmic picture.
